Feelin' Film

In a time when film criticism is as provocative as ever, Feelin' Film ventures to change the discussion from what we hate about a film to what we love about it. We judge more on emotional experience than technical merit. Every movie makes us feel something.

For March's Donor Pick Episode poll we asked our Patrons to choose between five female-directed films in honor Women's History Month. We're pretty sure they chose this film not only because it is a beloved recent favorite, but also because Patrick has a known distaste for the horror genre. Well, the joke's on them because both hosts really connected with Jennifer Kent's film in a big way and we have a touching conversation about grief, parenting, and moving on. We hope you'll listen.

This special episode is brought to you by a generous anonymous patron via our Premium Pick process. We're thrilled that we were given the opportunity to cover this film, though, because it impacted us both greatly on an emotional level while also stretching our brains to follow its high-concept science fiction ideas. Our discussion is not meant to explain the film, but rather to offer some expression of our reaction to it. Enjoy!

Jordan Peele follows up his massively successful directorial debut with this creepy, layered thriller/horror (comedy?) that is also full of pretty strong social messages. Unpacking all of it is a challenge, though, and we're joined by Emmanuel Noisette of Eman's Movie Reviews and our newest Feelin' Film team member, Caless Davis, for an in-depth conversation and analysis of the mysteries Us has to offer.

Some movies take an emotional toll, and this adaptation of John Green's beloved best-selling YA novel is definitely one that fits the description. Teens, romance, and disease has become a sort of weird genre, but is there value in it? We definitely think so and have a wonderful, heartfelt conversation about what The Fault in Our Stars means to us, and why we think it can be an impactful story for others as well.

In this episode we’re closing out February with the month’s Donor Pick. Our Patrons voted and chose Steve McQueen's Best Picture winning historical biopic for us to cover and we have an emotional, but meaningful conversation about this very important film. It’s a doozy, as any of you’ve who have seen it well know, so settle in with your comfort food of choice or a warm blanket and wrestle with history alongside us.
