Feelin' Film

In a time when film criticism is as provocative as ever, Feelin' Film ventures to change the discussion from what we hate about a film to what we love about it. We judge more on emotional experience than technical merit. Every movie makes us feel something.

For our first ever Christmas episode, we choose a film that really fits the "feelin'" focus of our show. It's a Wonderful Life has long been a favorite and important movie to both hosts and discussing the lessons it has taught us is a real joy. In addition, we read some of our listeners' favorite Christmas movies and why they were chosen. Merry Christmas from Feelin' Film!

Enchanting and magical, this simple Hollywood tale of a jazz pianist falling for an aspiring actress is a journey of emotions. In Damien Chazelle's new modern-day musical we are treated to a deep masterpiece of storytelling from one of the profession's most talented young directors. This film provides plenty of great discussion material for us to feel our way through, and we even take some time to compare it in depth to Chazelle's previous outstanding film, Whiplash.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away... two hosts set forth on a mission to discuss the latest film in the Star Wars universe. With the release of Rogue One this week, we jump in to give our thoughts and talk about the experience we had with the first anthology film in the Star Wars world. We spend time talking about character development, Rogue One as a war movie, and the many ways in which our expectations and viewing experience are shaped.

In this bonus minisode, Josh Crabb of Reel World Theology joins Aaron to discuss one of the most emotionally affecting films of the year. Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight is a story of human connection and self-discovery about a young black man struggling to grow up in a neighborhood that doesn’t accept him. This film is already drawing a lot of awards buzz and rightfully so. We dive into its importance of representing a culture that we may not relate to, but that we can all empathize with.

This week, Aaron and guest host Blaine Grimes tackle the superhero genre and talk about one of Pixar's best films - The Incredibles. This episode gives us a chance to examine the amazing way in which Pixar blends emotional family depth and creative animated action into something special, and wholly unique despite its surface level similarities to the comic book stories we know and love. It's a super fun conversation and we hope you'll enjoy it.

Aaron is joined by guest co-host Blake Collier to discuss 2016's hit indie film Hell or High Water. With its West Texas setting capturing the atmosphere perfectly, expert acting, and tragically authentic story about brotherly love and the plight of poverty, this film is a modern western masterpiece. We have plenty of discussion material from a story rich in thematic depth and hope you enjoy the conversation.

Gabriel Green of the Underrated Podcast joins us this week to talk about one of the best science fiction films ever made. There are many kinds of sci-fi, but no film has ever captured the same combination of action, ideas, and character depth as Serenity. Its mere existence is a testament to the brilliance of Joss Whedon's Firefly universe, a world so beloved by fans that its story could not go unfinished. This is a masterstroke in storytelling that hits all of the right beats and is a must see for any movie lover.

This week we are covering one of our favorite films of all-time, Christopher Nolan's magical masterpiece - The Prestige. It is a film we talk about often and yet it still feels full of untapped discussion potential. Yes, there is plenty of magic, but there is also a deep (and brilliantly acted) character study about obsession and the lengths some will go to win. Come listen as we break it down as best we can and try to do justice to a movie that provokes our thoughts and feelings, and is endlessly re-watchable.

This week we journey back into the wizarding world for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the first film in a lengthy new series set in the USA. It's impossible to discuss this film without talking about the expectations fans of Harry Potter go into the movie with. We also have a great conversation about the difference in writing a new screenplay and adapting an already completed novel. We may not have thought everything about this film was fantastic, but there is plenty to like and it was fun working our way through it.

In this minisode, we tackle the deep themes in Denis Villeneuve's new science fiction masterpiece, Arrival. Based on a Ted Chiang short story called “Story of Your Life”, Arrival tells the story of an alien race who has landed on earth and humanity's attempts to understand why. This is a movie that falls into the thinking science fiction genre and we have a great time feeling and thinking our way through it together.

This week we cover one of 2016's most underrated films, the rom-com thriller, Nerve. With surprisingly incredible visuals and soundtrack, plus a timely story about the dangers of placing your identity in social media approval, this movie delivers a great experience that is fun, funny, and sweet. It's not just for young adults, and has a message worth hearing.

For this week's episode we discuss Mel Gibson's latest film, which is both powerful and important. Hacksaw Ridge had a huge emotional impact on us both and solidified its place among our favorites of the 2016. We talk in depth about how Desmond Doss' story needed to be told and marvel at just how well everything in this film comes together. It's a great conversation about sacrifice, conviction, and faith. This week we wrap up our trio of October-themed episodes with a cult classic and fan favorite, The Cabin in the Woods. This horror comedy by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard defies expectations and turns typical horror movie stereotypes upside down for one fun, crazy experience. It’s also surprisingly deep, and gives us plenty of heavy questions to discuss - like “Is its world worth saving?”

We bring on special guest Mikey Fissel from Reel World Theology to help us make the case for why the Wachowski's Speed Racer is highly underrated. This visually stunning film is more than just your typical live-action cartoon remake. It combines incredible style with eye-popping color and emotionally resonating themes to set itself apart. This movie is a must-see experience and talking about it is one heck of a fun conversation.

It's another Halloween-centric episode for this October and one of the best animated musicals ever made. We geek out over our love for Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, a film with a great message, incredible music, and unique characters. This week we chat about the Nat Turner biopic, The Birth of a Nation. Freshman director Nate Parker's passion project tells the story to Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher who initiates a deadly uprising in the American south. There is plenty to talk about and consider in this movie, which is becoming quite divisive - inspiring both audience protests and garnering quite a bit of Oscar buzz.

We kick off the scariest month of the year by discussing Mel Brooks' classic horror comedy, Young Frankenstein. Comedy like this seems to be a lost art and evokes a special kind of audience response that is built more on paying attention than shock value. With incredible acting, an atmospheric black & white setting, and wonderfully moody music, this is truly one of the greatest the genre has ever seen.

For our 25th anniversary episode, we do something that rarely happens - disagree. Aaron brings his experience with the remake's original source material into the conversation while Patrick approaches it from the eyes of a first time viewer. The result is an honest conversation about the necessity of remakes, expectations, and the film itself from two different perspectives.

In a particularly strong episode on the FEELIN' side of things, Patrick & Aaron express their deep love for the storytelling and message of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Everything seems to connect in a very special way when it comes to this film. The cinematography, score & soundtrack, acting, dialogue, and heart of it resonate in ways that lead to plenty of discussion about dreaming and having the courage to live.

Hey, you guys! This week's film was determined via listener vote, and you chose a beloved 80's adventure movie with plenty to talk about. For one of us it's full of nostalgia and for the other it's a totally new experience. But ultimately we both land on common ground in thinking that this is one of the most fun and well done adventure films we've seen. It's a great conversation about how when we view a movie affects our experience, and we hope you enjoy.

We try and unravel the mystery box that is 10 Cloverfield Lane, a film that proves the monster isn't always what we expect. With great performances, incredible sound design, and a twisty tense narrative, this debut film by director Dan Trachtenberg is one of the year's best. It even comes with a divisive ending, giving us plenty to talk about this week.

We don't take sides in this gang war, but we certainly lean more toward love than hate when discussing the all-time great musical. West Side Story is beloved by many, and for very good reason. Its themes of star-crossed love and race in America are handled with some of the best and most unique choreography ever produced. Mix in the many memorable songs and its easy to see why this is considered one of the best musicals ever made.
